The Power of Passion: How ESG Experience Sets Job Seekers Apart

Laura West

I work for TRIA, an IT and Technology recruitment company, where I lead the sustainability sector. Connecting clients with top technology talent and driving positive impact in the sustainability sector feels like the perfect fit after earning a First Class Honours degree in Geography and working on marine conservation projects.

As a recruiter in sustainability, the benefits of candidates with sustainability experience are clear. Organizations reducing their environmental impact are more attractive to candidates seeking new roles. A PWC report found that 65% of people in China, Germany, India, the UK, and the US prefer socially conscious companies.

Professionals aiming for sustainable organizations are more successful when showcasing their passions alongside their roles. I spearheaded TRIA's partnership with 'Trees for the Future,' aiding African communities in sustainable agriculture. Qualifications related to sustainability or carbon footprint reduction are becoming vital and showcase passion, self-motivation, and care for the planet.

The green economy is creating 24 million jobs globally by 2030, and when 1.2 billion jobs depend on a healthy, stable climate, this industry is more important than ever. The main challenges faced with recruitment into sustainable companies are two-fold. They often don't have the budget for top candidates that industries like finance or marketing will, and there is a lack of understanding the purpose or importance of the roles. This is why educating yourself and your company in these areas is so important.

Recommendations to Employers:

  • Adopt sustainability practices exceeding industry norms.

  • Link sustainability to the organization's prestige with awards and recognitions.

  • Demonstrate employee pride and celebrate successes to highlight a positive culture.

  • Prioritize sustainability as part of your business strategy.

  • Invest in a sustainable certification program.

Recommendations to Jobseekers:

  • Research the company's values and align them with your own.

  • Highlight sustainability experience and expertise, backed by qualifications and courses.

  • Show passion for sustainability efforts outside of job requirements.

  • Stay knowledgeable about the latest sustainability issues and trends.

  • Be open to learning and adapting as sustainability is a rapidly evolving field.

Developing your knowledge either as an employer or as a job seeker for the current and future market will only benefit you. So why not do some digging, improve your understanding, and raise your awareness of the impact you could make!
